A Valuable Workshop For Those Who Are Serious About Getting Published
Five years ago, Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry, co-authors of
The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published, created an event
that has drawn thousands of people into bookstores all over the country.
It’s called Pitchapalooza, the American Idol for books (only without
Simon) and it works like this: Anyone with an idea for a book has the
chance to pitch it to a panel of judges. But they get only one minute.
Eckstut an...d
Sterry team up with two guest industry insiders and/or prominent local
authors to form the judging panel. The Judges critique everything from
idea to style to potential in the marketplace and much, much more.
Authors come away with concrete advice on how to improve their pitch as
well as a greater understanding of the ins and outs of the publishing
industry. Whether potential authors pitch themselves, or simply listen
to trained professionals critique each presentation, Pitchapaloozas are
educational and entertaining for one and all. At the end of each
Pitchapalooza, the judges come together to pick a winner. The winner
receives a half hour consultation with Eckstut and Sterry. From Miami to
Portland, from LA to NYC, and many stops along the way, Pitchapaloozas
have consistently drawn standing-room-only crowds, press and blog
coverage, and the kind of bookstore buzz reserved for celebrity authors.
Arielle
Eckstut is an agent-at-large literary agent at the Levine Greenberg
Literary Agency, one of New York City’s most respected and successful
agencies. For 18 years, she has been helping hundreds of talented
writers become published authors. Arielle is not only the author of
seven books, but she is also a successful entrepreneur. She co-founded
the iconic company, LittleMissMatched, and grew it from a tiny operation
into a leading national brand which grossed over 30 million in retail
sales last year, and now has stores from coast to coast, everywhere from
Disneyland to Disney World to Fifth Avenue in New York City.
David
Henry Sterry is the author of 12 books on a wide variety of subjects,
from memoir, to YA novel, to sports, to anthology, to reference. His
most recent book appeared on the cover of the Sunday New York Times Book
Review. He is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post, and his
work has appeared everywhere from the San Francisco Chronicle to the
London Times. His first memoir has been optioned by Showtime and his
recent anthology has been optioned by the co-creator of Friends. Before
writing professionally, David was a comic and an actor, appearing in
over 1500 commercials for such products as AT&T, McDonald's, and
Chia Pets; and acted with everyone from Michael Caine to Zippy the Chimp
to Will Smith. His one man show, based on his memoir, Chicken, was
named the number one show in the United Kingdom for its entire run at
the Edinburgh Theatre Festival, Fringe by The Independent.
Together,
Arielle and David, have appeared everywhere from NPR’s Morning Edition
to The New York Times to USA Today. They have taught writers about
publishing everywhere from Stanford University, to the Miami Book
Festival, to the granddaddy of American bookstores, Strand Books in New
York City. Their book The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book
Published is the go-to book on the subject, and contains all the
information you'll ever need, taking you through the entire process of
conceiving, writing, selling, marketing and promoting your book.
